Your independent hometown award-winning newspaper
There were not very many fish but the weather turned out favorably and lots of people were in town. It was interesting to see that this year’s winners were all from out of town, Seattle being the furthest. The Treasure Hunt was also a great success as all the Treasure Chests were empty and over 50 Treasure Maps were distributed. Lots of kids also enjoyed fish printing and families came out for a delicious pancake breakfast.
The Rotary club of La Conner puts on this event year after year to bring people to town and to give families something to remember. Over the years I hear so many people say I remember coming to this when I was a kid, and now they are back with their own children to continue this unique tradition. I am one of those people who have great memories of the Smelt Derby as a child and now shares judging duties with my two sons Marcus Tellvik and Thomas Kahn.
We hope to be back again next year for the 55th Annual Smelt Derby!
On Behalf of the Rotary Club of La Conner and La Conner Booster Club, we would also like to thank our generous sponsors:
Port of Skagit, Skagit Traditions Realty, La Conner Medical Center, Island Internal Medicine, Pioneer Market, NW Farm Credit Services, Blade Chevrolet, Washington Federal, Sierra Pacific Industries.
A special thank-you to Skagit Bay Search and Rescue for providing life jackets and waterfront patrol. Also, La Conner Fire Department for their support of the Smelt Run.
I appreciate the support of the La Conner Weekly News, too.
Sincerely,
Patsy Good
