Town signs $100,000 cell tower lease

The Town Council gained $100,000 for the Town in less than an hour at its June 11 meeting: After months of negotiating, Council passed having Mayor Ramon Hayes sign an agreement with Crown Castle Cell Tower, a Texas-based company. The 42 year lease, with extensions, includes camouflaging the extension portion of the tower, annual rent increases, a percentage share of the subleases and the signing bonus.

An agreement for terms of reimbursements between the Washington State Patrol and the La Conner Fire Department also passed unanimously.

Hayes announced the Swinomish Tribe’s $750,000 grant for the new La Conner library. He told Council of his June 17 presentation to the county commissioners for a $500,000 proposal for Skagit County economic development funds for the library

A northern extension of the boardwalk was discussed. Town Planner Marianne Manville explained that the comprehensive plan has several policies addressing this, necessary for applying for grants. Hayes listed several items that would take precedence over an expansion.

Councilmember Bill Stokes asked Brian Lease about the potential fire hazard of dead cottonwood trees in Pioneer Park when the public works director made his report. Lease said that he is keeping an eye on the trees and has already removed two. Hayes brought up the state’s prediction of a heavy fire season.

Lease also reported his department’s need for a second seasonal position. The job has been posted.

Resident Dan O’Donnell asked if there were offers on the Kirsch Property. Hayes replied the Town had one offer, made a while ago.

O’Donnell also asked Council to review its water agreement with Anacortes. “I know I’m wearing out my welcome, but this is important,” he said.

Council discussed and then decided a utilities committee meeting was needed. They invited O’Donnell to attend.

Councilmember Jacques Brunisholz’s absence was excused by Councilmembers Stokes, Marylee Chamberlain, John Leaver and Mary Wohleb.
