La Conner’s Mike Compton is in the hall of fame. After a lifetime of wrestling, starting before his winning a conference champion and being named Most Inspirational Wrestler at Western Washington State College in 1970, he has again been awarded: Nov. 2 Compton was elected to the 2019 Hall of Fame class of the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association.
Compton finished his coaching career at La Conner (2004-2011). Hired as athletic director, he created a wrestling program. Before he retired, the Braves reached “the top-ID in state,” the induction ceremony program stated.
His first teams were at Burlington-Edison, 1988-1993, and Anacortes, 1995-2001. Over his career, Compton coached 48 league champions, 27 region champions and 49 state placers, including nine state champions, winners of twelve individual titles.
Compton wrote in an email: “All the kids, coaches, parents and fans that I worked with had so much to do with me receiving this honor, that I know I have been truly blessed.”
The 2019 Hall of Fame class includes fellow high school head coaches Mike Bressler and Don Owen.
