Mayor Ramon Hayes has proclaimed Oct. 24 World Polio Day in La Conner. The Rotary Club of La Conner is grateful to the Mayor and citizens of La Conner who have supported efforts to beat polio.
Polio has been a scourge in the U.S. and across the planet. Before a vaccine was developed, the world lived in fear of this disease that wrecks the central nervous system, especially in children.
Since 1979, Rotary International has taken consistent large-scale steps in support of a 99.9% eradication rate. But Rotary did not do it alone. It took financial generosity, level-headed recognition of the problem and strategic partnerships with The Centers for Disease Control, World Health Organization, UNICEF and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
It is partnerships like this and contributions from all of us that push us closer and closer to 100% eradication.
