Your independent hometown award-winning newspaper
To the Editor:
We were taken aback at the recent letter to the editor, Dec. 9, titled “Biden: seizing guns is dangerous.”
The first sentence asks the question, regarding those who knock on doors to confiscate firearms: “...what percent of those doing the knocking will find themselves ducking for cover?” And this; “The Second Amendment ...was written with such door knockers in mind.” He finishes with the implication, based on imagined history, that those who advocate gun registration risk being executed.
So much violence in such a short letter! In a small town family newspaper, no less. Sentiments such as these seem better suited to dark corners of the internet where those who fantasize about acts of violence have flourished in recent years.
The writer encourages “people on the left who agree with the anti-gun movement and want......to seize weapons” to “educate themselves on how dangerous”’ this might be. Since the writer claims to be concerned about public safety, he may wish to educate himself on how dangerous it is to be an American in our gun-obsessed nation. The following verifiable data comes from the website for Everytown for Gun Safety (www.everytownresearch.org):
- Every day more than 100 Americans are killed with guns and 200 more are shot and wounded.
- The U.S. gun homicide rate is 25 times that of other high-income countries.
- Firearms are the leading cause of death for American children and teens, more dangerous than motor vehicles and cancer.
From http://www.worldpopulationreview.com:
- The U.S. has the highest gun ownership rate in the world (civilian firearms per 100 people), with 120.5 civilian firearms per 100 people. There are more guns than people.
- The U.S. is one of only three countries that consider gun ownership a constitutional right. (the other two are Mexico and Guatemala.)
As for the Norway firing line from which Quisling “learned the hard way about registering and seizing firearms”, Norwegian court records indicate he was executed for embezzlement, murder and high treason. Gun seizures and registrations are not mentioned.
Please don’t continue to give letters threatening violence a home in the La Conner Weekly News. People who want to read material like this know well where to find it.
