Matika Wilbur interviewed Sunday on national telecast

Matika Wilbur’s fame continues to grow.

The Swinomish Indian Tribal Community member and La Conner High School grad, one of the country’s leading photographers, was interviewed on national television Sunday in her role as co-host of a critically acclaimed podcast addressing key Native American issues.

Wilbur appeared with Desi Small Rodriguez on a segment of the Yasmin Vossoughian Show on MSNBC.

Wilbur and Rodriguez, a Northern Cheyenne tribal member, are hosts of the “All My Relations” podcast that explores contemporary and cultural Native American topics and stories of interest to indigenous people.

Vossoughian invited Wilbur and Rodriguez to appear in light of the recent discovery of hundreds of human remains buried in unmarked graves near a former residential school in British Columbia that housed indigenous children taken from their families.

Wilbur and Rodriguez also spoke to Vossoughian about the lingering human rights crisis involving missing and murdered indigenous women in North America.

It came as little surprise that MSNBC would reach out to Wilbur and Rodriguez for Sunday’s telecast. Their “All My Relations” podcast was featured in the New York Times last year as one of the nation’s top Native-produced audio programs.

The podcast evolved following Wilbur’s work on Project 562, a documentary series in which she embarked to take photographs of at least one person from each of the 562 federally recognized tribes in the U.S., a production she subtitled as “Changing the Way We See Native America.”

“All My Relations” was a natural sequel to that experience.

“I wanted our people to feel represented in the pod space,” Wilbur told The Times in November, “and to provide more opportunities for our people to

hear about issues they care about.”

On Sunday she and Rodriguez were able to share those issues with a national cable TV audience.
