La Conner V-ball team spreads net to collect for fundraiser

The two-time defending state champion La Conner High School volleyball team has had few close calls in recent seasons.

But a clothes call is part of the Lady Braves game plan this summer.

La Conner players are serving up a five-week “Clean Out Your Closets” campaign, collecting clean and sellable clothes and household textiles as part of an eco-friendly team fundraiser.

They are asking participants to place gently-used items in bags to be collected between now and the third week in August.

“We would like everything by Aug. 20,” said head coach Suzanne Marble, who is coordinating the project, “so we can get it all together.”

Marble said the team is in the process of lining up a drop-off site for donors to deliver men’s, women’s and children’s clothes, coats, shoes, scarves, handbags, wallets, fashion accessories, ties, belts and backpacks. Bedding, comforters, blankets, sheets, towels, linen, tablecloths, curtains and pillows will also be accepted.

Proceeds from the sale of donated goods go to charitable causes and support of the volleyball program. The team each year contributes to public health initiatives, most notably cancer awareness and research.

During the fall volleyball season, La Conner traditionally schedules an October Dig Pink home match in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lady Braves had their 2020 regular season delayed until this spring, with NW2B matches only slated. La Conner swept all those contests, not losing a single set, often posting double-digit victory margins.

La Conner won the 2018 and 2019 State 2B Tournament net crowns at the Yakima Sun Dome and would have been a leading contender for the 2020 title had it not been for the virus crisis.
