It’s true that practice makes perfect.
But the La Conner High School volleyball team remained perfect last week without any practice.
After having had several playing dates shelved earlier due to COVID-19 infections, the two-time defending state champions were faced with a heavy makeup schedule featuring four league matches in as many days.
The Lady Braves (6-0) won each in straight sets, completing a Monday through Thursday sweep of NW2B foes Concrete, Orcas Island, Friday Harbor and Mount Vernon Christian.
Ellie Marble dominated the net at MVC, delivering 15 kills. The 6’-0” junior outside hitter also showcased her versatility with 10 digs, two fewer than the dozen recorded by senior libero Rachel Cram.
Middle blocker Makayla Herrera, a 6’-2” junior, contributed strong numbers as well – finishing with 10 kills and eight digs.
Emma Keller fueled the attack with 19 assists. Keller, a 5’-7” setter, added four digs, three service aces and a kill.
Sarah Cook likewise filled the stat sheet. The 5’-6” senior hitter recorded nine digs, seven kills and five aces.
Morgan Huizenga, a 5’-9” sophomore middle blocker-outside hitter, allowed her team to control the tempo by serving a match high eight aces.
Hannah Cook, a 5’7” senior defensive specialist and Aubrie Sloniker each provided a service ace. Sloniker, a 5’-6” senior, added four digs for the winners. Junior Josie Harper, 5’-9” right-side hitter, chipped in a kill.
La Conner is in the midst of another busy week, though the team was able to squeeze in a Monday practice session.
“Everything is all on schedule for this week,” La Conner head coach Suzanne Marble confirmed to the Weekly News on Sunday.
La Conner entertained NW2B foe Darrington late Tuesday and are slated to host league rival Coupeville today (Wednesday) at 6:30 p.m.
A much-anticipated road match at 4A Glacier Peak is set for 7 p.m. Thursday. Glacier Peak sported a 2-4 mark through last week, including a 3-1 setback to Kamiak last Thursday.
La Conner travels to Olympia this Saturday for an invitational tournament whose bracket features teams from larger enrollment schools.
