Background and experiences
Glen Johnson has lived and worked in the valley for over 60 of his 66 years, attending Conway and Mount Vernon schools and Skagit Valley Community College.
Glen spent three years in the army during the mid-seventies, in Germany, when he traveled extensively in Europe.
He studied the humanities, or inhumanity, as the case may be.
He returned to his agricultural roots, working as a pesticide applicator, dairy worker/milker, food processing, plant worker, student seedsman, composter and ultimately buying and co-operating Mother Flight Farm, with his since deceased wife, Charlotte.
The Johnsons hosted young people from around the world for 25 years.
Glen served on the Skagit County Solid Waste Advisory Committee.
He ran for state legislature in 1996, and 2nd District U.S. House in 2000, 2008 and 2012.
He was elected to the Board of Tilth Producers, a statewide organic agriculture consortium, and served 11 years, finding presenters for an annual conference that drew upwards of 500 people.
He would both present and introduce presenters.
Glen was vice president and headed the research committee.
This led to his belief in innovation, which include a weed barrier fabric mat, small scale thermophilic compost unit, small scale potato digger and a new dike design that has yet to be fully described or understood by anyone.
Residents’ personal safety and security
My concerns about our community’s safety and security are more about floods and tsunamis, than petty criminals breaking into cars. Not to trivialize this issue, I think we should have a community block watch type program, somewhat like how our volunteer firemen are facilitated. My concern for our safety and security has led directly to my patentable new dike design.
Town approach to starter homes
My new dike design came directly from my concern for low cost, high functioning housing. I have offered to give this design to the town, my alma mater, and to The Port of Skagit, to no avail. So, I am hoping that the community will give me the time to explain my plans in detail. It is holistically designed to be affordable housing, environmentally friendly, fish friendly, tourist friendly and taxpayer friendly.
Representing and communicating with residents
I am very approachable, and have an affinity for writing, so communicating with me is quite easy.
Financial contribution for the La Conner Library
We are in process with the new library, so I don’t have a financial contribution number in mind, but I do think that building a new library, before the dike that is missing is a mistake of the highest magnitude.
Positioning La Conner for 2050
The best way to position La Conner is by being a visionary leader, with concepts that make sense from many perspectives.
