BREAKING: Candidate interviews at 5 p.m. special town council meeting Tuesday

Friday afternoon, Oct. 22, Mayor Ramon Hayes notified the La Conner Town Council of a 5 p.m. Oct. 26 special meeting for interviewing the three candidates for the vacant council position 1. The three applicants are Bill Bruch, Richard De Shon and Annie Taylor.

Council agreed to this meeting when they set the framework for the interviews at a special council meeting Wednesday, Oct.20. The 5 p.m. meeting will be in-person at Maple Hall and via the Zoom video conference. Candidates will have 20 minutes but not be limited in their time, questions will be ad hoc – not known beforehand – and speaking order will be chosen at random by town staff. Interviews are the only agenda item.

Council agreed to continue interviews into the 6 p.m. regular council meeting if more time is needed.

Administrator Scott Thomas said as it is a public meeting, candidates may be present the entire time.

Attendance will be limited based on room capacity and social distancing. Mayor Ramon Hayes noted that additional attendees can gather in the atrium.

Residents will be able to address council during the public comments period at the start of the regular council meeting and again at the Nov. 9 public comment period before council discusses and votes to fill the position. The town code states that the full remaining council must vote on the replacement council position.

If people coming for the 6 p.m. find the room full they will need to wait in the entrance area until the special meeting ends.

Council position 1 is open due to Jacques Brunisholz’s mid-August resignation.

Masks are required for in-person attendance.
