Two La Conner High School wrestlers are again more than holding their own wrestling on a co-op basis with the 2A Burlington-Edison girls’ mat program.
Delaney Cobbs and Kaliana Bill, who have wrestled regularly for Burlington Edison High School because La Conner no longer offers the sport on campus, have returned to the Burlington-
Edison fold for the 2021-22 campaign.
They made their presence felt on several levels Saturday.
The two seniors turned in strong showings at the Everett High School Girls’ Wrestling Tournament, an event that drew entrants from multiple enrollment classification schools throughout the Puget Sound region.
Cobbs, also a standout La Conner soccer player, placed second in the 190-pound class at Everett. Hers is among the premier divisions at invitational tourneys as it features defending state 3A champion junior Alivia White of Marysville-Pilchuck.
“Delaney has her in her bracket at most of the tournaments,” Cobbs’ mom, Mandy Buck, a Swinomish Tribal Community paraeducator, told the Weekly News. “They’ve been wrestling each other since they were 11 and 12-years-old.”
Bill, meanwhile, finished one match away from placing in the 170-pound division despite being undersized at that weight level. She will likely wrestle in the 155-pound division by season’s end.
Cobbs and Bill will join the B-EHS team for meets tomorrow (Thursday) at Mount Baker and Saturday in Aberdeen.
And, if all goes according to plan, La Conner fans could see the duo wrestle at home sometime this winter, Buck said.
“Their coach and the athletic director are working to try and get a dual match at La Conner,” said Buck, “so that Kali and Delaney can have a senior night at their school, too.”
