Braves end season with two league losses

Boys basketball —

It was a win-win night at Landy James Gym Thursday for both the Coupeville and La Conner boys’ basketball teams.

The visitors won on the scoreboard, closing out what is probably the program’s first-ever undefeated regular season dating to 1917 with a 79-45 victory over the Braves.

La Conner had cause to celebrate, too, despite losing a second NW2B/1B decision. Braves fans had the opportunity to salute the team’s seniors marking their final home appearance.

Josh Denton, Cameron Burks, Spencer Olson, Luke Marble, Haydin Dinuis, Myles Sydzik, Mason Wilson, Desmond Ballew and Finn Ellingsworth were honored prior to tipoff.

Unfortunately for the Braves, the game didn’t go nearly as well as those ceremonies. Coupeville (15-0 overall; 11-0 in NW2B/1B action), which advances as the No. 1 entry to the Northwest District 2B Tournament this week, looked every bit a top seed at La Conner.

The Wolves used superb perimeter shooting to break an early 10-10 tie. The key sequence was a 15-0 Coupeville run that came with the visitors leading 28-20 in the second period. As a team, the Wolves drained 12 treys.

"The boys played hard against Coupeville,” La Conner head coach C.J. Woods said afterward. “Coupeville just made shots.”
