Maple park design great

In the ideal world, I would like to have all of the Maple Street/ Heldlin field back again. But we don’t.

It is hard to imagine something that will be a useful and attractive park in the small remaining part of the field. But I believe that the Curt Miller plan does it well. I am actually pleased with what he has presented to the Parks Commission. The design responds to every point of the citizens survey that was taken last year about what to do with that space.

A rain garden, a playground, benches, native plants for the birds and pollinators, open space, a picnic area with views of the farmland off the back – and graceful swales will make up the park in an uncrowded and uncluttered way. A creative sculptural element tops it off.

I attended the parks commission meeting when the plan was revealed. The attendees asked many thoughtful questions as people do in La Conner.

Support was unanimous.

We would all still like to have the totality of our beloved Maple Field back, but that is not possible. This will be a great small park.

We will need a great park to help the community heal.
