Planning commission approves lot on Washington Street

April Meeting-

The town planning commission met April 19 and approved a historic design review for a third lot of the proposed Greg Ellis housing development behind Pioneer Market. Two other lots have already been approved.

Town planner Michael Davolio said he expects to be able to present the three remaining lots for review at the commission’s May meeting. Ellis anticipates breaking ground when he secures buyers for the lots, he added.

Additionally, there might be even more housing options in town.

The Port of Skagit is interested in re-zoning some of its property at La Conner Marina. Commission chair Marna Hanneman said that might create options for development of affordable apartment units there.

“There’s been a lot of discussion around that topic,” Davolio said, alluding to concern for the tight supply locally.

Davolio said he will contact the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community officials to inform them that parking code restrictions that had held up any potential upgrades to the tribe’s former open-air market property on First Street have been resolved.

“The parking had to be resolved before anything could be done with the property,” resident Linda Talman, a former commissioner, said.

Commissioners welcomed back Carol Hedlin, who missed the March meeting after having broken her collarbone and some ribs. While well on the mend, Hedlin said she is still having to increase the range of motion with her affected arm.

“I’m doing well,” she said, quipping that “I’m giving up horseback riding. I’ll find something else to do.”

She ruled out skydiving.
