Baseball Braves fall to Orcas

The La Conner High School baseball team ripped nine hits, drew 10 walks, and received solid outings from pitchers Nathan Bailey and Haydin Dinuis when the Braves hosted Orcas Island Friday afternoon.

But it wasn’t enough to overcome crucial defensive lapses as the Vikings posted a 14-7 NW2B/1B victory.

“We had too many errant throws at critical times,” Braves coach Jeremiah LeSourd said afterward of his young club, which fell to 1-7 in conference play.

“It led to extra bases and too many earned runs,” LeSourd said.

However, the Braves stepped up their game in other areas.

“Offensively,” he noted, “we’ve begun to see more pitches.”

Bailey, Cameron Burks, and Mason Wilson each lined a two-bagger for the Braves.

LeSourd said Bailey and Dinuis pitched well, the final score not reflective of their respective mound stints.

“Both of them did a solid job,” LeSourd said, “and gave us a chance to compete.”

The Braves were looking to flip that script yesterday when they faced Concrete, against whom they notched their lone win of the season, a 13-3 home triumph on April 1.

La Conner is slated to host Darrington Friday at 4 p.m.

The La Conner softball team was defeated 28-8 by Orcas Island on Friday. The Lady Braves (0-6 in league; 0-8 overall) entertain Darrington at 3 p.m. this Friday.
