The La Conner High School baseball team made major strides with an impressive 6-0 league triumph at Concrete April 26.
Braves pitcher Brogan Masonholder earned his first win by tossing a six-hit shutout that secured La Conner a two-game season series sweep of the Lions.
“We played with energy and confidence,” coach Jeremiah LeSourd said afterward. “It was a major step forward.”
C.J. Edwards started off with a double and was driven home by Nathan Bailey.
Leading 1-0, the Braves sent 11 batters to the plate during a five-run outburst keyed by two-run doubles from Edwards and Ivory Damien.
Edwards and Bailey had two hits apiece and each drove in a pair of runs.
Edwards continued his hot hitting Friday, the 29th, in a 9-4 La Conner setback to conference rival Darrington. He went two-for-four with a double and two RBIs.
Cameron Burks added a double and a single, two walks and an RBI for La Conner, which despite a four-run second inning rally couldn’t overcome Darrington.
The Braves also hurt themselves on the basepaths, LeSourd said.
“We had opportunities on offense,” he noted, “and were able to get on base and get runners in scoring position. But the base-running mistakes were tough lessons.”
La Conner played at defending league champion Friday Harbor May 3. The Braves return home for a Senior Day game against Mount Vernon Christian May 6 at 4 p.m.
The Lady Braves hosted Sedro-Woolley May 2 in a non-conference softball doubleheader before visiting Friday Harbor May 3 for two league games.
