The La Conner Youth League transitioned from Hedlin’s ballfield to the La Conner schools, an adjustment that has not always been easy.
But the players, coaches and families had a much easier go of it on a recent sun-splashed Sunday afternoon at the ideal home away from home: T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
The contingent joined others in the region taking part in Little League Day, May 8.
Besides seeing the Seattle Mariners edge Tampa Bay 2-1, the group walked on the field before the game, posed for photos in front of iconic Mariners statues and some even met the Mariner Moose, the team’s popular mascot.
“It was a great day,” Youth League board treasurer Catey Ritchie told the Weekly News. “I won’t lie that I was answering texts while standing in the shower that morning trying to make sure everyone got tickets. Chaos!”
Still, it was the kind of chaos that makes for fond lifetime memories.
“We all managed to get there,” said Ritchie, “and had a great time.”
Ritchie praised the efforts of youth league coaches and parents to make it all happen for the kids. She singled out Heather Edge.
“She coaches one of our teams and she loaded her Tahoe full of kids and carted them all down there,” Ritchie said. “She treated them to all the amenities, including photos with the Moose and then made it home in time to prep nets for the prawn opener early the next morning.”
