Construction update
There is a great deal of activity at the construction site at 520 Morris street.
Tiger Construction continues to do a fantastic job and runs a very clean site.
The cement ramp is being installed along the length of the building leading to the south entrance.
Numerous other trenches and piles of rock are ready for additional concrete pours and wood forms, flags and stakes cover the property indicating a great deal of work to come.
Soon there will be more sidewalk and parking on the property and the story pole and exterior landscaping will follow.
Everyone who has been eagerly watching the site for months now will notice we have a bright new banner on the perimeter construction fencing, declaring that the library will be opening this fall.
The library expects our move from the existing building into the new La Conner Swinomish Library will begin in late July. We look forward to sharing more details on the schedule as they become available.
There are a great many things which need to be installed and transitioned from the old library to the new library, including all new improved technology to run our systems, services, digital platforms and internet.
While much of the infrastructure installations are taking place behind the scenes, when we move the library collection we are planning the move to allow our community to take part. When the library begins to move its collection we will have appointment times when anyone from the community may sign up for a time and help us roll some of the books to the new location. We will have a variety of wheeled book carts and options for a wide range of physical abilities. Those of you who want to bring a wagon and your children to take part are welcome to do so. We will have more details on the moving of the books next month when we will be closer to knowing exact dates.
In the meantime, there is still a lot to look forward to. The giant windows have been installed in the northeast corner of the building, skylights are going in, we look forward to the arrival of the remaining windows in a month or so and a full solar array will be installed on the roof this summer as well.
Soon, the 18-foot story pole carved by Swinomish Master Carver Kevin Paul will be installed near the front entrance, with landscaping to follow.
Please pass by the site and enjoy the developing landscape and gradually beautifying building!
