Josie Harper, a senior at La Conner High School, is the Soroptimist of La Conner Honored Student for April. Josie excels in academics and sports. She is also modest.
This season Josie was twice recognized for her basketball skills statewide. She was named to the 2B all-state second team by SBLive, a sports website that tracks statistics and rankings. The other was the honor of being on the all-state team. The team played a real game, in which Josie and Ellie Marble played with girls from all over Washington. "That was really cool!" she exclaimed.
Another court in which she shines is volleyball. Josie was an all-state selection with the 2022 La Conner 2B volleyball title winners. Josie was even a homecoming senior princess to round out her court experiences.
Academics present another world in which Josie is a high scorer. She earned a 3.99 average netting her placement on the honor roll every term. Her favorite subject is AP (advanced placement) environmental science, taught by Mr. Hinderman. Josie's choice of rigorous courses demonstrates her determination to work hard. She will graduate as class salutatorian.
This hard working young woman coaches youth sports for both basketball and volleyball, following her dad. Her father, Joe Harper, is the high school basketball coach. She also finds joy in her job at The Waterfront Cafe by serving people and cooperating with her work team there to figure out how to best support them.
Washington State University will be her academic home next season as she pursues her studies in biology, with the ultimate goal of becoming an orthopedic surgeon.
Coral and Joe are her proud parents and Roman is her little brother. Josie was given a gift certificate to Vintage La Conner, the thrift store made possible by volunteers and the generous donations of the community. The shop works to support women and girls – and families – in the community.
