Reading is good for you

As a voracious reader, I was dismayed to read in the Jan. 9 edition of The Washington Post that 46% of Americans did not read a single book in 2023.

Close to a million books are traditionally published each year in the U.S. Here in La Conner, we have an outstanding new library and a wonderful independent bookstore. With all the books available in a wide number of genres (non-fiction and fiction, including literary, historical, thriller/suspense, mystery/crime, science-fiction, romance, westerns, fantasy, young adult, graphic, etc.), there is something for everyone in a myriad of formats: hardback, paperback, e-book, audio book.

Books have power to enlighten, educate and entertain; they can broaden your mind, take you to places you’ve never been, challenge assumptions, make you laugh and make you cry. In his book, In “Defense of Reading,” author Daniel R. Schwarz adds, “Reading complements our experience, sharpens our perceptions, gives us insight into how others live, enables us to understand other cultures and periods and gives aesthetic pleasure.”

With all the books available here in La Conner – and all the formats available – I urge La Conner residents to commit to reading at least one book in 2024. If you’re unsure where to start, a librarian or bookstore employee would be happy to help.
