Candidates file for elected offices

Candidates seeking elected office faced a deadline last week to toss their hats into the ring.

Skagit County Commissioner Ron Wesen, a Republican, is running for re-election. His challenger for the District 1 seat is Rylee Fleury, an independent, who has a Hope Island address. Wesen has registered with the Washington Public Disclosure Commission. Fleury has not. Nor has he provided a phone number or email address District 1 covers western Skagit County north and west of the Skagit River south fork and west of I-5, generally.

District 2 Commissioner Peter Browning is running against Mount Vernon Councilmember Richard Brocksmith, a Democrat. Browning states no party preference. Both registered with the PDC. Brocksmith has raised $2,297 and spent 45% of it. Browning has not reported any funds. District 2 covers greater Mount Vernon to just east of Lake Cavanaugh and south of the South Fork of the Skagit River to the Snohomish County line.

Legislative District 10 Sen. Ron Muzzall, R-Oak Harbor, has Democratic opponents Denny Sandberg and Janet St. Clair, both of Camano Island.

The LD 10 Position 1 seat has incumbent Rep. Clyde Shaver, D-Oak Harbor, running against Republicans Carre Kennedy of Oak Harbor and Yvonne Gallardo-Van Ornam of Arlington.

The LD 10 Position 2 seat has incumbent Rep. Dave Paul, D-Oak Harbor, facing Coupeville Republican Gary Wray.

The 10th District covers southwest Skagit County, the northwestern tip of Snohomish County and Island County.

Twenty-seven candidates are running for governor, five for lieutenant governor, four for superintendent of public instruction and two each for state auditor and state treasurer.

U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell has 10 opponents. Second Congressional District Rep. Rick Larsen has seven opponents.

Six Skagit County judicial candidates are unopposed.

Races with more than two candidates have an August primary. The top two vote-getters, regardless of party affiliation, advance to the November general election.

Races with only two candidates will appear only on the Nov. 5 election ballot.
