Braves take second in district track

Tommy Murdock, Yandel Rosales-Rojas, Kiana Jenkins and Morgan Huizenga each won multiple events and four eighth graders teamed to win the girls’ mile relay to lead the La Conner High School track teams to second-place finishes at the Northwest District 2B Track Meet in Coupeville on Saturday.

Murdock, the reigning Washington State 2B boys’ hurdles champion, claimed titles in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and the 110- and 300-meter hurdles.

The senior hit the tape in the 100 in 11.5 He ran 23.14 in the 200, 15.21 in the 110 hurdles, and 39.88 in the 300 hurdles.

Rosales-Rojas, an eighth grader, took the boys’ long jump with a leap of 18’ 7.75” and the triple jump at 36’ 6”.

Eighth grader Jenkins won the girls’ 100 and 400 meters, running 27.51 and then 1:02.66.

A senior, Huizenga took top honors in the girls’ javelin (116’ 8”) and high jump (4’ 8”).

Eighth graders Aisley Zimmerman, Reese Bird, Kim Williams and Nora McCormick combined to post a 4:44.24 winning time in the girls’ 4x400 meters, The Lady Braves won three relays.

The Lady Braves were second on the team leaderboard to host Coupeville, trailing 197-180. Friday Harbor placed third with 109 points. Northwest Christian of Lacey was fourth with 45 points.

Maeve McCormick, Nora McCormick and Lydia Grossglass were solo victors

Maeve McCormick ran the 100 meters in 13.35. Nora McCormick, yet another La Conner eighth grader, cleared the 300-meter hurdles in 51.94. Grossglass took the 100-meter hurdles with a 17.13 finish.

Morgan Huizenga, Maeve McCormick, Jenkins and Grossglass won the 4x100 (52.93) and 4x200 (1:52.10) .

Grossglass (300-meter hurdles), Williams (triple jump), and Nora McCormick (100-meter hurdles, long jump) contributed silver medal finishes.

Addison Wigal (javelin) and Zimmerman (100-meter hurdles, triple jump) chipped in third place performances.

The boys also ran second to Coupeville by a 231-149.5 margin. Friday Harbor (111.5) and NWC (18) rounded out the field.

Flint Huizenga also mined gold for the boys team, capturing the javelin with a toss of 137’ 5”.

Simon Bouwens (100 meters), Marlin Bralens (300-meter hurdles), Alex Martin (discus) and Lane Tenborg (long jump) added to the Braves’ point total with second-place finishes. Martin also placed third in the shot put.

Rosales-Rojas, Tenborg, Bralens and Bouwens were second for the Braves in the sprint relay, clocking a time of 46.41.

Next up for La Conner’s state qualifiers is the Washington 2B Track and Field Championships May 23-25 at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima.
