Michael Robert (Mike) Chevalier passed away early June 11 at his home outside La Conner at the age of 74. He had been ill for a few months when his generous heart failed him.
Mike was born and raised in Bellingham and spent the last 50-plus years of his life in La Conner. In the 1970s and early 1980s he was a co-owner of the infamous 1890's Tavern.
Mike was extremely proud of his time in the U.S. Naval Submarine Service from 1968-1972. He served during the Vietnam conflict in Southeast Asia and points north on classified assignments.
He was fun, kind, and a true gentleman with a large circle of good friends who will miss him very much. He loved sailing, golfing and playing cribbage with his wife. The crib games involved much swearing, throwing down of cards and laughter.
Mike adored his family and truly enjoyed all his friends. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Wendy Chevalier of La Conner; his daughter Lily Chevalier (and her best friend Sue Lowman) of Lynden; brother Jim (Janna) Chevalier of north Bellingham; sister Teresa (Jeff) Staskiews of north Bellingham; nephew Michael (Chelsea) Staskiews; and nieces Jennifer and Susie Chevalier; and treasured friends Colin and Janet Stewart of Bay View.
At Mike's request, there will be no service. There will be a celebration of life in La Conner later this fall.
