Skagit Habitat for Humanity to share plans for 3 houses in La Conner

Prospective homebuyers who’ve been priced out of the local housing market might want to set aside two hours on Saturday, Aug. 3, to learn about Skagit Habitat for Humanity’s Homebuyer Program.

The organization will hold an orientation event from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Pioneer Park Amphitheater to explain how their Homebuyer Program works. The organization will start accepting applications for three Skagit County families interested in affordable homes in La Conner.

Skagit Habitat for Humanity will explain the application and selection process, describe how the program works and answer questions. Applications will be available directly after the event and open to submission for two weeks. Those who may qualify for the Homebuyer Program or would like to learn more about the program for a friend, neighbor or loved one are encouraged to attend.

Skagit Habitat for Humanity’s Homebuyer program helps low-income Skagit families build and buy a home that they can afford. Selected families pay a monthly mortgage based on their income and contribute to the construction of the home by investing their sweat equity with the help of volunteers and construction professionals.

To qualify for the program, applicants must be residents of Skagit County whose household income is 60-80% of the local median based on family size. They also must be able to demonstrate the need for safe, affordable housing due to either living in inadequate or substandard housing or due to currently paying 50% or more of their income toward rent.

Additionally, applicants must be willing to partner with Skagit Habitat for Humanity to complete volunteer sweat equity hours and homebuyer education classes and have enough documented income to qualify for loan repayment. Applicants must also be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and be established residents of Skagit County for at least one year prior to application.

Skagit Habitat for Humanity has built 45 homes with Skagit families and alongside the local community in service of its mission to build homes, community, and hope. The nonprofit organization expects to greatly increase the numbers of safe, affordable homes built in Skagit County over the next 24 months beginning with these three homes in La Conner. This comes on the heels of recently completing four homes in Mount Vernon.
