With the expected finalizing of Kamala Harris to be the Democratic presidential nominee, our planet has hope for remaining livable. Earth will of course remain no matter what, but the four years that Trump occupied the office set back actions to limit climate change by 10 to 15 years.
No one can argue that our weather has become more hostile to humans and animals. Many cities are passing the temperature threshold for outdoor activities plus the number of severe storms and wildfires has gone beyond any expectations. By Trump eliminating the regulations put in place to limit carbon emissions the problem is quickly becoming uncontrollable.
And yet Trump routinely puts out “drill baby, drill,” plus enticing petroleum companies to have unlimited drilling for a contribution of a billion dollars each. He obviously believes that voters do not have the ability to think.
And if you do not think Trump is a danger to democracy you must have missed the often-repeated clip of him telling a Christian (?) conference last Friday that they needed to vote for him and that they might never have to vote again! Dictator? As I write this, Venezuelans are voting to hopefully remove Maduro who has become the de facto dictator, in office for more than a decade, spewing the same rhetoric as Trump.
Speaking of Venezuela, over 7 million residents have fled the country becoming migrants. Many of those would return to their home country if conditions improved. Most of the people trying to cross the U.S. southern border would much rather stay in their home counties if conditions allowed them to live a reasonable life.
When we beam our everyday life via TV, etc., it is natural that they would want that same life. Within the last couple of months a resident of Shelter Bay has written two letters; one of which complained about migrants yet he admitted moving here from Seattle - I think that is migration only he left Seattle. I too migrated from my birth state of Nebraska to Syracuse, N.Y., then to Seattle and finally La Conner in 1988 only in my case I was not fleeing anything that was bad. As I look out my window I see multiple pickups with trailers loaded with landscaping equipment and owned by migrants. Shelter Bay would be a mess without them.
The second letter from the aforementioned Shelter Bay resident had as its purpose to deride President Joe Biden. I feel sorry for the writer. What he complained about was one of our best presidents demonstrating what being a patriot means.
To finish: if you care about yourself, your family, your community, your state, your country and the livability of our home planet you will vote for Kamala Harris for president.
Allen Elliott is a retiree living in Shelter Bay.
