Your independent hometown award-winning newspaper
My name is Randi Perlman and I live in Alaska, but that is another story … .
A dear friend of mine relocated from Alaska to Shelter Bay several years back to care for her aging mom. During the next eight years, my friend found a beautiful lot on a bluff overlooking the Swinomish Channel, built a new home with a spectacular view and firmly ensconced herself in lovely La Conner. For each of the last two years, it has been my good fortune to spend a month here house-sitting and caring for her aging dog while she travels. After spending a combined total of nine weeks in this special community I, too, have fallen in love with La Conner.
Which brought me to last Wednesday’s evening meeting at the Civic Garden Club to listen to discussion on the future of the long-running La Conner Weekly News. And what became evident pretty quickly was the community support and enthusiasm for keeping the local newspaper going by doing whatever is necessary to do so. I have a really good feeling in my heart that these efforts by many fine people will lead to success, with some bumps along the way as with any new venture.
With a background in various media venues, including a printed paper, I offer sincere congratulations to Ken Stern for a tough job incredibly well done over the past eight years! He’s grown a small-town newspaper in a town that hasn’t grown very much and kept it a relevant, beloved facet of life in La Conner. I hope he will stay on as a consultant for this project and help move the transition forward along its new path. It will be invaluable to both Ken and the community.
And who knows, if I find myself back in this lovely area on a more permanent basis, perhaps the Weekly News will be looking for a writer or some other help. It has truly been a pleasure getting to know La Conner and some of its residents a bit better and gaining a deep appreciation for its spirit and spectacular abundance.
