Lydia Grossglass went for the hat trick while teammates Angie Pena, Maicy Bowles and Lily Dougliss scored one goal each as the La Conner High School girls’ soccer team improved to 3-1 with a 6-0 shutout win over the 1A Nooksack Valley Junior Varsity at Whittaker Field last Friday.
Pena and Bowles got the Braves on the scoreboard with back-to-back goals. Grossglass followed with three consecutive scores and Dougliss found the net in the second half to cap the La Conner offensive onslaught.
“The girls had excellent communication,” La Conner head coach Maddie Huscher told the Weekly News afterward.
“They looked up for passing, but best of all they spoke kindly to each other with lots of support the whole game,” Huscher said.
The win over Nooksack was a tune-up before La Conner opened NW2B/1B action at Friday Harbor on Tuesday afternoon before the Braves visit league foe Coupeville at 6 p.m. Thursday.
The La Conner boys’ soccer team, meanwhile, squared off last week against Friday Harbor and Coupeville, dropping twin hard-fought 1-0 decisions.
With the win, Friday Harbor improved to 3-1 despite playing without senior Malachi Cullen, who is recovering from knee surgery.
At Coupeville last Friday, the Wolves’ Angel Partida scored the lone goal.
The hard-luck Braves (0-3-1) appeared to tie the contest, but officials disallowed the goal with an offside call. Another scoring opportunity slipped away when a La Conner penalty kick in the late going sailed over the net.
The Braves, who hosted Orcas Island on Tuesday, entertain Lopez Island at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4.
