Skagit County’s collaborative effort in the Great ShakeOut 2024 includes the county government, sheriff’s office, the cities of Anacortes, Burlington, Mount Vernon and Sedro-Woolley, the towns of Concrete, Hamilton, Lymon and La Conner, the Skagit County Fire Chiefs Association, Skagit County Dike District Consortium, Skagit 911 and Skagit County Emergency Medical Services
The Great ShakeOut drill is Oct. 17 at 10:17 a.m. and aims to educate and prepare the community for the possibility of an earthquake. Tsunami sirens will sound and an alert will be issued subscribers of the County’s Code Red text messaging. Participants will practice the essential “Drop, Cover and Hold On” response, which is crucial in reducing injuries and fatalities during an earthquake.
“We urge all residents, schools, businesses and organizations to participate in the drill,” said La Conner Town Administrator Scott Thomas. “Earthquake preparedness is a community effort and our participation in the Great ShakeOut is a testament to our commitment to keeping La Conner safe and resilient.”
The Great ShakeOut is a worldwide earthquake drill and preparedness event.
Education and resources are available on the Skagit County DEM website, skagitcounty.net/Departments/emergencymanagement/, and the Washington State Emergency Management Division: mil.wa.gov/preparedness.
