Meet the candidates for 10th District Legislature

Dave Paul (D), Representative, Pos. 1

Why are you seeking office?

This is a moderate district that expects its legislative leaders to bring people together to find practical and bipartisan solutions that best serve our community. As we see our nation become increasingly polarized, I'm proud to continue to work across the aisle to serve our community and state. I am committed to building bridges that help connect diverse people, groups and communities within our District and finding points of bipartisan consensus.

It's especially important to collaborate closely with local and county leaders to better address three major issues for our community: mental health, substance use disorder treatment and homelessness. Much of my work involves bringing law enforcement and public safety officials, local leaders and judges together to discuss ways to better coordinate services across agencies to help members of our community. For the 2025 session, I'm working on policy changes to better address behavioral health treatment, the construction of more treatment facilities in our region and emergency and supportive housing for those who are homeless.

Voters can trust that I will listen to their concerns and advocate on their behalf in the state legislature. Most of my legislative proposals are ideas from constituents, such as strengthening pathways for students to earn college credit in high school and expanding educational benefits for veterans. I've championed infrastructure investments, such as the Mount Vernon Library Commons, the La Conner Library, updates to the Wiley Slough Dike Project and Skagit County's emergency communication system. I understand the importance of K-12 public education and work closely with schools throughout our district to ensure our students are prepared for the jobs of tomorrow. I will continue to focus on providing high quality public schools that prepare and train students for family wage jobs. It is also critical to ensure that we have a robust community and technical college system that provides outstanding training and educational opportunities without students having to rack up student debt. I hope I can earn your vote in November.

How will you increase funding for public school special education and mental health programs?

I will continue to fight to fully fund special education and increase funding for mental health programs in our public schools.

Where will significant funding for building "missing middle" housing come from?

I will continue to advocate for the Housing Trust Fund and other areas of the Capital Budget to fund workforce housing.

If I-2109 passes, repealing the tax on long-term capital gains, how will the legislature replace that state funding?

There are no good options for replacing funding for schools and other vital programs if I-2109 passes.

If I-2117 passes, repealing the Washington Climate Commitment Act, what legislative acts are needed to replace it?

There are no good options for replacing funding for much-needed environmental programs and transportation projects if I-2117 passes.

What legislative initiatives will reduce usage of gasoline engine vehicles?

The legislature has made significant investments in electric vehicle infrastructure and programs for making EVs more affordable to working families.
