Meet the candidates for Skagit County Commission

Rylee Fleury (I)

Why are you seeking office?

To provide innovative solutions and restore common sense governance while upholding the rule of law. My main three points are to 1. lower taxes. 2. promote affordable housing. 3. protect farmers and their farms.

I believe it is my duty as a resident of Skagit County to serve this county's people and answer the call to help them with their issues while providing them with better opportunities to thrive. Because frankly, government was designed to help people with their problems; not be their problem.

What will be the solution to zoning for agritourism?

My goal is to protect farmland and farmers. I will adhere to the state and national Right to Farm Acts and allow farmers to farm their land as they see fit. We must protect these people who are the backbone of America and make sure they have what they need to survive and thrive. Because we all need farmers if we want to eat. I believe in balancing agricultural preservation with economic opportunities. We need to carefully review our zoning policies to ensure they support both traditional farming and responsible agritourism, always keeping our farmers' interests at the forefront and realizing the state and national Right to Farm Act supersedes any county code or rule.

How will you work with the county's cities to increase their municipal housing density?

I plan to collaborate closely with city officials to identify and remove unnecessary barriers to housing development. This includes streamlining permitting processes and reassessing certain building codes to encourage responsible, cost-effective housing solutions.

How will you increase climate resiliency with county initiatives?

My approach to climate resiliency focuses on sustainable practices that also support our local economy. This includes exploring diverse energy solutions, promoting water conservation and implementing smart land use policies that protect our natural resources. We are short on energy, but there are other options that are more efficient and safer than battery farms. I intend to work towards those clean energy solutions and protect Skagit County's natural beauty in the process.

What will your advocacy be for a countywide library system with your fellow commissioners?

While a countywide library system hasn't been a primary concern raised by voters, I'm open to exploring this option if there's significant public interest. Any decision would involve careful consideration of costs, benefits and community needs.
