Friday Harbor Film Festival Oct. 25-27

The world premiere of “Van Gogh: Poets & Lovers” is one of the many highlights of the 12th annual Friday Harbor Film Festival this weekend, Oct. 25-27. The 16 full length documentaries and 21 short films are shown twice on five screens at three venues.

“Fish War” covers over 50 years of indigenous tribal fishers fighting to secure their treaty rights with legal battles ending in the U.S. Supreme Court and now the fight to save salmon.

“Van Gogh: Poets & Lovers” producer Philip Grabsky is coming from London for question and answer sessions. The film was made in close collaboration with Great Britain’s National Gallery, which is hosting the U.K.’s biggest ever Van Gogh exhibition. The focus is on Van Gogh’s unique creative process, exploring the artist’s years in the south of France, where he revolutionized his style. It shows Saturday at 7 p.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday.

The organizes promises “an extraordinary celebration of impactful filmmaking, featuring a diverse array of documentaries that inform, inspire and ignite change.”

The Friday evening Opening Night Gala Honoring Filmmakers requires a separate ticket. Morten Lauridsen will receive the Andrew V. McLaglen Lifetime Achievement Award, and “Shining Night: A Portrait of Composer Morten Lauridsen” will be screened.

Ticket options include a full festival pass, Saver 6-Pack and tickets to the Gala Honoring Filmmakers. The entire online festival is $15. It runs Oct. 28-Nov. 3 and offers most festival films, plus several additional ones.

Check fhff.org for tickets, the film guide and more.
