September had most of its rain fall in just a day

More rain than average fell in September, with the 1.6 inches of rain Sept. 25 almost as much rain as most Septembers have gotten this century, an average of 1.9 inches. For the month, 2 inches fell in just six days; the 0.2 inches on Sept. 14 was the only other precipitation greater than a tenth of an inch. After no rain the first nine days, it rained four of the next five days, with four events under 0.01 inch.

The 2 inches of rain was the ninth year of at least 2 inches of precipitation. Five of the 10 wettest Septembers have been since 2014, with the 5.2 inches in 2019 the wettest September this century.

For the year, the 23.4 inches of rain is 6.3 inches above the average this century. Rainfall has been above average seven of nine months.

It rained daily last week, Oct. 14-21, for 2.5 inches of rain. Most of that was Friday-Monday, 2.1 inches, with 1.2 inches Saturday.

September started warm, with two days above 80 degrees the first week and the month's high of 82.6 Sept. 8 setting a record for the date.

It then cooled, with the next 70-plus day Sept. 23 and 73.4 the next day, the last time above 70 degrees. Sept. 28-29 saw highs of 59 degrees.

Sept. 30 set a record low temperature, 37.4, for the date, the month's lowest temperature. The average day's temperature of 49.6 degrees made it the month's coldest day.

Midmonth lows were below 50 degrees for eight days, Sept 15-22 and dipped below 46 the last five days, Sept. 26-30.

The daily average low was 48.6 degrees but that is only 0.2 degrees below the century's average monthly low.

Average daily temperatures were right at the century averages, with the 68-degree high one-tenth degree below the average and the daily average of 58.2 one-tenth degree above the average of the last 25 years.

Measurements and data are at Washington State University's Mount Vernon weather station on Memorial Highway.
