Addison Keller garners state athlete of the week award

In volleyball, as in U.S. courtrooms, the defense never rests.

A prime example is La Conner High School junior libero Addison Keller, whose outstanding defensive play and clutch serving has been formally recognized by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, the governing body of extra-curricular programs in the state’s schools.

The WIAA has named Keller its Athlete of the Week based on her play as libero – a defensive player specializing in passing and digging – in La Conner’s recent victories over Mount Vernon Christian and Darrington.

Keller recorded 18 digs and seven service aces in the Braves’ win over Mount Vernon Christian. She added 16 digs and six aces against Darrington.

She posted 22 digs and an ace in La Conner’s non-league home setback to Neah Bay Oct. 12.

“Keller’s consistency in the back row helps keep her team in matches and sets a solid foundation for the offense,” the WIAA stated on its website, adding that her performance in Week 6 of the fall sports season was stellar.

The Braves, with Keller notching 22 digs and five aces, defeated 1A Sultan on Oct. 15. La Conner fell to 10-7 on the campaign with a 3-0 defeat at Coupeville on Thursday despite 17 digs from Keller.

Each week, the WIAA and Gesa Credit Union honor WIAA student-athletes for outstanding performances and impactful contributions in their communities. Each winner receives a letter of recognition from the WIAA Executive Director, a certificate of achievement and a $25 gift card.

Keller was one of 12 student-athletes selected statewide for Week 6 WIAA Athlete of the Week honors.
