Netters split; football team falls short

There was no place like home for the La Conner High School volleyball team last week.

The Braves (10-7) defeated 1A Sultan in a seesaw, five-set, non-conference match at Landy James Gym on Oct. 15 with Nora McCormick (8) and Reese Bird (7) combining for 15 kills to lead the La Conner attack.

Results were less favorable when La Conner went to Coupeville.

Coach Pam Keller’s charges lost in straight sets to the NW2B/1B rival on Oct. 17.

League-leading Coupeville (11-2 overall; 8-0 in NW2B/1B matches) was paced against La Conner by Teagan Calkins (12) and Lyla Sturrmans (11) who finished in double-digit kills for the victors.

La Conner’s only two league losses have come against Coupeville.

The Braves fared better at home against Sultan, a larger school foe, clinching a tight 3-2 triumph with a three-point margin in the decisive fifth set.

The line score with Sultan was a back-and-forth 25-14, 22-25, 25-15, 20-25, 15-12 in La Conner’s favor.

In addition to Nora McCormick and Bird, Maeve McCormick (6), Abi Poulton (4), Aaliyah Gonzalez (2) and Mia Delage (1) recorded kills.

Nora McCormick helped fuel the La Conner attack with seven assists.

In addition to her strong play at the net, Bird delivered a team-high 12 assists and six service aces.

Poulton chipped in two blocks and nine digs, libero Addison Keller had 22 digs and senior defensive specialist Addison Wigal collected seven digs.

Maeve McCormick (21) and Nora McCormick (21) joined Keller with double-figure digs.

La Conner, which entertained Friday Harbor in NW2B/1B play on Tuesday, welcomes Orcas Island tomorrow (Oct. 24) for a 5:30 p.m. league date.

The La Conner football team, coming off a 22-14 non-league win over Waterville-Mansfield, fell short at undefeated Tulalip (7-0) by a 46-6 score on Friday.

The Braves (2-4) look to return to the win column this Friday with their much-anticipated Homecoming matchup opposite a 1-6 Muckleshoot Tribal Kings squad. The Oct. 25 Muckleshoot-La Conner kickoff at Whittaker Field is set for 7 p.m.
