We are the crown of our destruction

My fellow mammal mates, the Earth has been struck with the equivalent of the comet that took out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Yet life did not give up. The Earth has suffered many extinctions (five major ones). We are now living in the sixth extinction referred to as the Anthropocene.

In geological history, 99 percent of everything that has lived has been wiped out. The tree of life is not a towering, lofty oak tree or redwood. The tree of life is a crust that has been beaten and burned and stumped on. Yet life goes on.

Some think humans are the crown of creation but now humans have become the crown of our own destruction. Nevertheless, there are and have been many glorious and wonderful humans and it seems that dark and tragic times bring out the best in some people. Granted the percentage may be small but it has taken six generations of stars to make the raw materials of life.

How many fish perished when trying to get away from the predators in the deep ocean? Probably billions but some made it and changed the surface of the Earth and the composition of the sky. I won’t say forever. There is no forever in geological history.

In the human world, hubris and arrogance has always been our downfall. All such constructs lasts the shortest time and an orb of hubris will outdo them all. In the meantime, we the people need to evolve our heart and mind for whatever the next phase of beingness to find the greater angels of our nature.
