Skagit County election results certified Nov. 26

All elections in Skagit County and the state’s 10th Legislative District were long settled when the counties certified Nov. 5 election results yesterday, Nov. 26.

State Sen. Ron Muzzall’s (R-Oak Harbor) was re-elected to the LD 10 Senate seat. His margin after Snohomish County election staff counted ballots Monday was 2%, 50.9% to 48.9%, and 1,798 votes ahead of Island County Commissioner Janet St. Clair He has led by increasingly large margins since the third day. This race had the highest voter turnout among the three LD 10 seats, 89,946 total votes, over 900 more than in the Shavers-Kennedy contest.

Incumbent LD 10 State Reps. Clyde Shavers (D-Oak Harbor, Pos. 1) and Dave Paul (D-Oak Harbor, Pos. 2) won by wide margins.

Shavers has 53.2% and leads by 5,866 votes against Republican Carrie Kennedy. Paul gained 53.7% and is 6,644 votes up on Republican Gary Wray.

Incumbent Skagit County Commissioners Ron Wesen and Peter Browning also increased their margins of victory with every ballot count since election day. Wesen leads Hope Island resident Rylee Fleury with 62.6% and by 15,815 votes. First elected in 2008, Wesen's next term will be his fifth.

Browning has a 13,235-vote lead, 60.4%, against Mount Vernon Councilmember Richard Brocksmith. This will be his second term.

Legislative District 10 comprises Skagit County’s southwest portion, the northwest corner of Snohomish County and Island County

Island County again led turnout, with 82.4% of voters casting ballots.

In Skagit County 79.8%, 70,912 of the county’s 88,818 registered voters, cast ballots.

Snohomish County was close behind, at 79.5% voter turnout. County staff finished counting ballots Monday.

In the three counties over 545,900 ballots were counted.

Voter turnout statewide was 78.8%, almost four million of the just over five million registered Washingtonians.

The Weekly News went to press before final ballot counts were announced.

The Secretary of State’s office will certify all elections by Dec. 5.
