Girls rebound at Lummi after 1-point loss

La Conner basketball —

A tough loss was soon forgotten as the La Conner High girls’ basketball team bounced back from a heartbreaking 48-47 setback at 3A Mount Vernon last Wednesday to defeat Lummi in a key road test on Saturday.

Maeve McCormick (13) and Abi Poulton (12) combined for 25 points in leading La Conner (2-2) to a solid 45-36 triumph at Lummi.

McCormick scored nine points in the second half, helping La Conner stave off a late Lummi comeback bid.

Poulton scored 10 of her points before halftime as the visitors built a 25-15 lead at the break.

Nora McCormick and Shaniquah Casey added six points each for the victors.

Kiana Jenkins (5) and Della Damien (3) rounded out La Conner’s scoring.

Maeve McCormick and Damien each dropped three-pointers for La Conner, which survived a rough seven-for-17 night at the charity stripe.

Ailina Rabang paced Lummi with a game-high 14 points, 10 coming in the second half.

La Conner (2-2) literally rebounded from its gritty one-point defeat at Mount Vernon, a contest in which the Braves bolted to a quick 18-4 edge. But the hosts battled to within 23-18 at halftime, setting the stage for a back-and-forth affair over the final two periods.

Mount Vernon, whose roster includes former La Conner players Kim Williams and Jacqui Lam, improved to 3-0 two weeks into the season.

Anaya Saldivar-Slater paced Mount Vernon with 15 points and 17 rebounds. Alivia Luvera chipped in 10 points for the winners.

Maeve McCormick netted a game-high 22 points. Casey tallied another 10.

Coach Joe Harper’s team visited 1A Sultan Tuesday night. La Conner returns home to face NW2B/1B rival Friday Harbor at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13.

La Conner continues its home league slate at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, opposite Orcas Island.
